Astorga, the two thousand years old roman Asturica Augusta, was founded by the Romanic Caesar Augusto in 15 B.C.
Situated on an elevation inside the valley of the river Tuerto, it has an excellent communication with the northwest of the peninsula, as well as with the rest of the mountains. It counts with the highway VI, which unify Madrid with Galicia and the interstate 120 along the North.
Two railways, responsible for the increasing of a little industry and its high level society in the past, leading the town to an important commercial centre for the villages in the east of the province of León.
Although being an important pilgrim-way together with Burgos, the arrival of new habitants, new costumes and new ideas, could not avoid a stagnation of the urban development.
Actually, with a population of 15.000 habitants, there are a lot of little establishments living from the habitants consume of the different villages. The services goes from facilities to the administrative organism and all activities in relation with tourism.
